It's been an exciting three months at the Foothills Mall, as Feldman Equities' ongoing $18 million transformation of the property continues on schedule. Ground was broken in January on the latest project, the Northside Shops at Foothills Mall.
Consisting of over 16,000 square feet of new retail space, the Northside Shops development is already 65 percent pre-leased to such tenants as PayLess Shoes, EB Games, Sprint Cellular, Sally's Beauty Supply, Data Doctor and Wild Noodles. Just under 5,000 square feet remains and completion is expected in mid-May, with tenant openings projected in July and August. In other construction news, the Loews Cineplex project is at the mid-way point, with interior construction just begun on the new theater stadium seating, lobby and other improvements. The Cineplex will remain in operation during the renovations, with three or four theaters being renovated at a time and the others remaining open. The entire project is expected to be completed in late July, with the opening of the grand new interior entrance and closing of the parking lot entrance schedule for May 2004.
During any given week, the Loews cinema at Foothills Mall is attended by thousands of patrons, with the majority currently entering through the theater's existing parking lot entrance and never entering the mall. The conversion to modern stadium seating and the redirecting of all of Loews patrons into the interior of the mall is expected to have a dramatic effect on overall mall pedestrian traffic, and as a result, sales in the mall are expected to increase sharply.
New construction projects on the immediate horizon include the West Food Court entrance renovation, the Northwest Mall Entrance renovation and upgrades to the Food Court area and common area restrooms, all slated to begin in May. Projects completed since the new ownership took over the mall in April of 2002 include the Southeast Entrance reconstruction, the Famous Footwear expansion, and new pad site developments for Thomasville Home Furnishings, Fox & Hound Smokehouse and Tavern, the Arizona Central Credit Union and Compass Bank. A fifth pad site was developed by the new ownership and is occupied by Starbucks, Subway, T-Mobile, Baskin Robbins, One Hour Martinizing and Chipotle Grill.
Robert M. Rusing, a retail specialist with over 15 years experience, has been named Director of Leasing for the Foothills Mall by Feldman Equities, Inc., owners of over three million square feet of retail space nationwide, including the recently  acquired Harrisburg East Mall in Harrisburg, PA
Mr. Rusing, a resident of Phoenix, AZ, was previously Vice President of Leasing for Grossman Company Properties, responsible for leasing and development of the company's nearly two million square-foot portfolio of retail and office properties. Prior to that, Mr. Rusing was a retail leasing specialist with Grubb & Ellis Commercial Real Estate.
Mr. Rusing is an active member of the International Council of Shopping Centers, where he was a member of their Southwest Deal Making Committee and chair of several annual Deal Making Sessions, including the 2001 Regional Economic Review, 2000 Neighborhood Shopping Centers and 1999 Changing Face of Southwest Regional Malls.

Basketball legend Steve Kerr, the popular former University of Arizona Basketball standout and five-time world champion National Basketball Association (NBA) star, made a special appearance at the Foothills Mall recently to sign autographs, shortly after announcing his retirement from pro ball and his plans to become a broadcaster.. During his stellar career, Kerr played for the Orlando Magic, Cleveland Cavaliers, Chicago Bulls, and most recently, the San Antonio Spurs.
